Nick Schurmann took on the role of Music Director of the Baden Street Singers in 2019, after serving as Assistant Music Director since the group’s inception in 2015. He holds a BMus(Hons) in oboe performance, and is a well-known teacher of oboe and voice.
Nick has been singing barbershop since 2005, and has performed with some of Australia’s best-known groups, including multi-award winning choruses the Baden Street Singers, Sound Connection, and Vocal Evolution (for which he is the Assistant Music Director). He is qualified by the Australasian Guild of Barbershop Judges as a Music judge, and regularly has his vocal arrangements performed on the contest stage. Nick is passionate about bringing more dedicated mixed barbershop arrangements to the stage, and has been pioneering a new style of arranging that takes advantage of the greater vocal range that a mixed ensemble provides.
Outside of barbershop, Nick teaches oboe at a number of schools and voice privately. He also performs regularly as an oboist and chorister, and has appeared on stage with Perth Symphony Orchestra, The Giovanni Consort, Gondwana Chorale, and Adele.
