The Baden Street Singers formed in early June 2015, when founding musical director, Lionel Pierson, seized the opportunity to enter a small mixed harmony chorus into the Young Singers in Harmony Australian National Youth Chorus Competition. This was the first time that Barbershop Harmony Australia (BHA) opened its biennial national competition to include women in its longstanding men-only competition. Within three months, the group was on the competition stage in Melbourne, where they were awarded the title of Young Singers in Harmony - National Chorus Champions.
Since then, the Baden Street Singers have lived up to their champion status in various competitions from 2016 to present. The group is active in the wider community with concerts, workshops, festivals and educational outreach programs. With their passion for singing and guidance by expert musical leadership, the Baden Street Singers are unlike any vocal ensemble you've seen before.
They began 2019 with their acclaimed FRINGE WORLD show ‘Whose Note Is It Anyway?’, featuring a new style of choir performance in which audiences controlled the music, ranging from tempo adjustments to improvised song covers and spontaneous originals.
This year, the group is under the guidance of a new musical director, Nick Schurmann, and have welcomed a substantial increase in membership after a successful round of auditions. Having recently qualified at the Western Region competition, the Baden Street Singers are preparing to travel to Hobart in September 2019 to defend their position as Mixed Chorus Champions. Their contest set this year includes a new and original ballad, ‘Follow My Love’, written by chorus member Julia Nicholls and arranged by musical director, Nick Schurmann. For all general inquiries, please contact our secretary, Tom, at: email@example.com
